The Cinematography of “The Illusionist”

About 15 minutes into my first viewing of this film, I asked myself "I wonder when am I going to see the main character up close, to see the details on his face or an important expression up close?" And by the end of the film I had realized that there isn't a single close-up shot in the entire movie. Very rare for an animated feature. To have so much heart and emotion expressed and performed by the hand-drawn animated characters and to never have the need to show the actor's thoughts with a close-up is incredible.
